Atiku Abubakar: A Champion of Education and Human Development - Lauretta Onochie

The emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been greeted with excitement and optimism by millions of supporters across Nigeria and beyond. For many Nigerians, his emergence represents not just the candidacy of an experienced statesman, but the elevation of a leader whose life and public service have consistently demonstrated a commitment to education, human development, and national progress.

Among the qualities that distinguish Atiku Abubakar is his deep and abiding passion for education. He understands that no nation can achieve sustainable development without investing heavily in the education of its citizens. His personal journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Nigeria's most accomplished entrepreneurs and political leaders has reinforced his belief that education remains the most powerful instrument for breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for future generations.

This conviction is not merely rhetorical. It is reflected in tangible actions. Atiku invested significant personal resources in establishing the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola, Adamawa State. The institution was founded with a vision to provide world-class education within Nigeria and to produce graduates equipped to compete in a rapidly changing global economy. Through this initiative, he demonstrated that education is not merely a government responsibility but a national duty that requires the participation of visionary citizens.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable examples of Atiku Abubakar's commitment to education was his intervention in the lives of several of the Chibok girls who were abducted by the terrorist group Boko Haram in 2014. At a time when the nation was still grappling with the trauma of the abduction and the uncertainty surrounding the future of the victims, Atiku stepped forward to provide educational opportunities for some of the affected girls.

He awarded scholarships to 14 of the Chibok girls, giving them the chance to continue their education and rebuild their lives after an experience that could have permanently shattered their dreams. This was more than an act of charity. It was a profound statement of principle and a direct repudiation of the extremist ideology promoted by Boko Haram.

The name "Boko Haram" has often been interpreted as opposition to Western education. The terrorist group's campaign of violence was built on fear, ignorance, and the deliberate attempt to deny young people—especially girls—the opportunity to learn and develop themselves. By sponsoring the education of the Chibok girls, Atiku Abubakar sent a powerful message that education must never surrender to terror.

Even more significantly, his action helped challenge the dangerous narrative that Islam is opposed to education. Boko Haram sought to falsely present its extremist views as representative of Islamic teachings. Yet throughout history, Islam has been one of the world's greatest promoters of knowledge, scholarship, science, and learning. The earliest Islamic civilizations established renowned centres of learning and produced scholars whose contributions transformed human knowledge.

As a devout Muslim, Atiku Abubakar's decision to invest in education, including the education of girls, demonstrated the true spirit of Islam—a faith that encourages the pursuit of knowledge for all people. His support for the Chibok girls effectively turned Boko Haram's propaganda on its head. While the terrorists sought to close classroom doors, Atiku opened them. While they attempted to extinguish hope, he reignited it. While they promoted ignorance, he invested in enlightenment.

The significance of this gesture extends beyond the individual beneficiaries. It served as a symbol of resistance against extremism and as a reminder that the most effective response to ignorance is education. Every scholarship awarded was a declaration that books are stronger than bullets, knowledge is stronger than fear, and opportunity is stronger than oppression.

As Atiku Abubakar now carries the banner of the ADC into the national political arena, many Nigerians see in him a leader whose commitment to education is proven not merely by promises but by a record of concrete action. His investment in educational institutions, his support for vulnerable students, and his efforts to empower young Nigerians through learning have established him as one of the country's foremost advocates for human capital development.

For us, his supporters, therefore, Atiku Abubakar's emergence is more than a political milestone. It is the rise of a candidate whose belief in education has consistently translated into action, and whose vision for Nigeria is rooted in the conviction that the nation's greatest resource is the potential of its people.
