Nigeria Cannot Become a One-Party State: A Call to Defend Democracy - Lauretta Onochie

The unfolding political developments in Nigeria demand the urgent attention of all patriots, democrats, civil society actors, and lovers of constitutional governance.

What we are witnessing is no longer an ordinary contest among political parties. It is a dangerous and deliberate drift toward the construction of a one-party state, where dissent is punished, opposition voices are silenced, and democratic institutions are manipulated to serve partisan interests.

The sustained weakening of major opposition parties, the atmosphere of intimidation surrounding elected officials, and the increasing use of state institutions as instruments of political coercion have combined to create a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.

Of particular concern is the failed attempt to destabilise the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the only major opposition platform that continues to inspire hope among millions of Nigerians. As citizens, legislators, governors, former governors, youth groups, professionals, and civil society actors continue to identify with the ADC as a credible democratic alternative, forces threatened by its rising national acceptance appear determined to fracture the party from within.

The reported elevation of aggrieved elements to create artificial factional disputes, the public endorsement of such factional claims by figures within the ruling establishment, and the pressure on electoral authorities to interfere in matters that are clearly internal party affairs raise serious constitutional and democratic questions.

The Nigerian Constitution, as well as settled judicial precedents, is clear that leadership disputes and internal administrative matters of political parties are not to be arbitrarily determined by external political forces. Any attempt by institutions of state to de-recognise duly constituted party leadership outside constitutional and judicial processes undermines the rule of law and weakens public confidence in democratic governance.

The danger of a one-party political order cannot be overstated. A nation without a viable opposition is a nation without accountability. When citizens are denied real political choices, governance becomes insulated from public scrutiny, impunity flourishes, and the democratic promise of popular sovereignty is eroded. Elections lose their meaning when all roads are forced to lead to only one political destination.

Nigeria’s democratic journey has been too costly, too historic, and too precious to be surrendered to the ambitions of any political tendency run by cavemen seeking total dominance.

Yet, even in this moment of pressure, there is hope.
The growing wave of Nigerians joining the ADC in large numbers demonstrates that the spirit of democratic resistance remains alive. Rather than weaken the opposition, every act of intimidation, overreach, or unconstitutional interference only strengthens the resolve of citizens who believe in political pluralism, constitutional order, and the right of Nigerians to freely choose their leaders.

This moment therefore presents a historic opportunity for the opposition and for all defenders of democracy to unite around a higher cause: the preservation of Nigeria as a nation of choices, not a nation of compulsion.

I call on:
All democratic institutions to remain neutral and faithful to the Constitution;
The judiciary to continue standing as the last hope of constitutional order;
Civil society and the media to resist every attempt to normalise democratic erosion:
Patriotic Nigerians across party lines to defend plural democracy;
Opposition leaders to close ranks and place national interest above personal ambitions.

The issue before us is bigger than party rivalry. It is about whether future generations of Nigerians will inherit a democracy where citizens can choose freely, organise freely, and speak freely.
Nigeria must never become a one-party state.
WE WILL NOT ALLOW IT!!!
The time to defend democracy is now.

God bless Nigeria.
